On the newsstand

For the launch of Pulse, a new supplement of the Sunday New York Post, Al Trivino chose Zydeco, a headline series in six weights. Al used the series to set a ‘super-masculine’ tone on the cover, and for signpost heads throughout. At about the same time, Page Six Magazine appeared, using several Freight series as part of the display ensemble.

Custom Typography

This is something of an ongoing project. Art Director Neil Jamieson really liked Jubilat, but wanted a slab with square terminals. Dropping the contrasts required by ball terminals required that we take down the contrast generally, which is especially nice at small sizes, and makes for a much stronger match for the content. Only a handful of characters changed here, but the details make all the difference.

On the newsstand

Huf·vud·stads·bla·det is probably my favorite proper noun in any language. The newspaper itself (headquartered in Helsinki & published in Swedish) more than exceeds any expectations inspired by its name, with sensitivity and modernity as unifying themes in an otherwise diverse design system. We worked with Kristofer Pananen on this Barn supplement, which features vivid color on uncoated paper, and uses nearly every weight of Omnes as a foil to Miller Daily.

From the Office

With the addition of Parsnip (napping, at left), our Williamsburg studio has been feeling undersized. After a year and a half in a former — some would say current — sweatshop in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg section, we’re hard at work installing the office in a larger space.
